An elderly man is fighting for his life after being seriously assaulted in the Wellington suburb of Kilbirnie this morning.
Police are investigating the incident, which happened at a home on Mahora St around 9:50am near the Pak'nSave supermarket.
The elderly man was taken to Wellington Hospital and is in a critical condition.
A man was arrested in the area shortly afterward in relation to the attack. He is being spoken to by officers.
Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee says police are still completing their inquiries and are talking to a number of other people.
They're looking for anyone who may have seen a man walking along Mahora St without a shirt on, heading towards Coutts St this morning.
