A New Zealand surfer says he’s lucky to have escaped serious injury after a shark knocked him off his surfboard in Sydney.

Roie Smyth says the shark was the size of his surfboard and left a dent in the side of it.

"I felt something pull on my leg rope and the end of my board just started sinking and we just rolled," he said.

Smyth believes a large wave scared the shark off and he managed to break free.

Lifeguards closed the beach for the day.
