Otago University student falls from porch

More problems have arisen from University of Otago's student culture after a young student fell around three metres off a porch at a large drunken house party last night.

It's the third incident in as many weeks and the mayor is worried about the city's reputation.

The party was raging at the seven-bedroom flat known as "The Manor" in Dunedin's student quarter last night.

Police and ambulance were there to treat a 19-year-old male who fell down through a hedge and onto the pavement.

This morning the clean-up was underway -- a hole in the hedge evidence of last night's fall.

The tenants were in recovery mode but don't believe there's a huge problem at University of Otago.

But it's just a week since a balcony collapsed at a Six60 concert badly injuring some students on Castle St. And at a student party a week before that, a flat with students sleeping inside nearly burnt down after a nearby sofa was set alight.

The University has shut down some of the cheaper bars in the student area hoping it would curb the culture, not fuel it.

The Mayor says having the most densely populated student housing area in Australasia doesn't help.

"Especially with social media there can be several thousand people at a party within half an hour," says Mayor Dave Cull.

He says he is worried about the University's reputation and understands parents of Otago students are worrying too.

"But I would say the level of support and pastoral care for students here is easily the best in Australasia, easily the best and that's reflected in our pass rates and our retention rates," he says.

But he acknowledges more may need to be done to stem the culture of these large drunken parties getting out of control.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly said that a balcony had collapsed in Dunedin. It also suggested a student was responsible for nearly burning down a flat -- but the cause of the fire is still being investigated. The article has been corrected.
