Police are hoping someone might recognise a helmet-wearing man who robbed a Whanganui dairy yesterday.

A lone man brandishing a pistol walked into the Durie Hill Dairy on Portal St at 2:10pm, wearing a long-sleeved black top, black pants, and a colourful motorcycle helmet.

He was also carrying a bag.

The person working at the shop was physically unhurt, but is "extremely distressed" and recovering with family.

"This aggressive male has gone into your local store and terrorised your local shop person and police need your help to solve the crime," Detective Aaron Bunker of Whanganui police said in a statement today.

Anyone with information can contact police on 06 351 3600, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
