Prime Minister John Key has been seen draped in the current New Zealand flag after teeing off at the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open Day.

He's been spotted joking with former Australia cricket captain Ricky Ponting at the New Zealand Open golf tournament in Arrowtown today.

Ponting placed the New Zealand flag on the ground for the first tee at The Hills ahead of the final round of the Celebrity Challenge, in response to Mr Key suggesting to Ponting at an event last night that Australia should change their flag.

Mr Key then draped himself in the flag and paraded around the teebox.

The pair are competing together at the New Zealand versus Australia Celebrity Challenge.

Mr Key has been at the forefront of changing the national flag, with voters being asked to choose between the current flag and Kyle Lockwood's black, white and blue silver fern design.

Voting officially closes on March 24 and the final result will be revealed on March 30.
