The owner of a south Auckland car dealership appeared in Manukau District Court this morning on charges of faking its AA Appraised used vehicle dealer membership.

Zodiac Motor Company Limited faces 14 charges, and its owner Nezam Anwer faces six, all brought by the Commerce Commission under the Fair Trading Act.

Zodiac advertised vehicles for sale that were AA Appraised when they were not, and Zodiac itself claimed it was an AA Appraised used vehicle dealer when it was not, the commission claims.

Zodiac began in 2006 as a registered motor vehicle dealer selling used and imported vehicles from a car yard on Great South Rd in Manurewa, Auckland.

However in 2014, Zodiac failed to show that 70 percent of its stock was AA Appraised, and as a result, AA removed Zodiac from the programme.

The commission alleges even though AA cancelled Zodiac's membership as an AA Appraised used vehicle dealer, Zodiac continued to promote itself as one on its website, car yard and in radio advertising.

The commission alleges Zodiac advertised individual cars on its website as being AA Appraised when they were not.
