A 26-year-old man has been killed in a shooting overnight outside the Papakura Railway Station in Auckland.

A second man, 27, is in a serious but stable condition at Middlemore Hospital.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder, and will appear in Papakura District Court this morning.

The incident occurred on Railway St, outside the Papakura Railway Station, around 1:15am. Passengers this morning are being prevented from going onto train platforms three and four, the New Zealand Herald reports.

Cordons are in place.

"Currently we are undertaking a forensic examination of the scene, and there will be some disruption for the public while we undertake that examination," Insp Bruce O'Brien of Counties Manukau police told Newshub earlier this morning.

Police haven't confirmed if they are looking for anyone else in regards to the incident, but have said there is no danger to the public.

The weapon used in the shooting has been recovered.
