They've been used by Wellingtonians for years, but now Aucklanders are catching on to the growing trend of E-bikes.

One of the city's largest retailers has seen a 35 percent jump in annual sales, but the electric bikes don't come without hazards.

Chris Boys might look like any other cyclist, but he's beating the Auckland traffic in style, with an E-bike.

"It's just fun," he says. "[You] get to the office [and] you've had a good ride."

Mr Boys is one of a growing number of people using electric bikes to get from A to B in busy Auckland.

He used to sit in traffic from Point Chevalier to the city for up to 30 minutes. Now his morning commute takes just a third of that.

While he's still getting some exercise, the E-bike gives him an extra boost, making it an easy ride to work.

"When I get to the office, I take the helmet off. I don't have to have a shower, I'm not wearing lycra -- it's brilliant," he says.

An electric bike could set you back anywhere from $2000 to $5000, but if that's a little bit out of your price range, you can upgrade your current bike for around $200.

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown's been riding an E-bike since 2012 and says they're popular in the capital, but she warns it's not all smooth-cycling.

"I do have a friend who went around a corner on an E-bike," she says. "It had just been raining [and] you can imagine what happened.

"She didn't come to any permanent harm, but you are going a bit faster. You tend to wear out your brakes a little more quickly so you do have to replace the brakes a little more often."

There aren't yet any safety rules around how fast E-Bikes are allowed to travel.

Auckland Transport says those standards are in the works and just like other cyclists, it's up to E-bikers to ride responsibly.

"E-bikes that are sold in New Zealand do generally have maximum speeds, after which you cut out the engine on the E-bike," says Kathryn King, Auckland Transport Cycling and Walking manager.

And for those still not convinced, Auckland Transport is running courses tomorrow for anyone wanting to test one out.
