Half of the on-licensed premises in Auckland targeted by police last night were caught selling alcohol to minors.

The controlled purchase operation caught out found four out of eight premises, with one minor as young as 15 served.

Only one of the four premises, which were located in Ellerslie, Panmure and Newmarket, requested identification.

"It's really disappointing and frustrating that we continue to have premises seemingly flout the law and their obligations," says Inspector Gary Davey.

"The message needs to start getting through -- if you sell alcohol to minors you will be dealt with in the strongest way possible."

The premises will be prosecuted under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act with the final decision made by the Alcohol Regulatory Licensing Authority.

The police operation came a month after five premises were caught in the western area of Auckland CBD selling alcohol to minors.
