Two deceased New Zealanders have appeared in a video released by Al-Qaida -- the first time the terrorist group has identified the duo.

The pair are Darryl Jones and Christopher Havard, named in the video as two fighters for the organisation who were killed in drone strikes carried out by US military.

They have been given alternate titles in the video, with a caption beneath Mr Jones reading Abu Suhaib Australi and Mr Havard labelled Abu Salma Australi.

The pair were both based in New Zealand before moving to Yemen, where they were eventually killed.

Mr Havard was living with his wife in Christchurch before emmigrating to the Middle Eastern nation -- apparently telling her he had to leave suddenly to be an English teacher in Yemen.

The US counterterrorism operation killed both men as they were travelling in a car in 2013.
