A man has been hospitalised with serious injuries following an assault in south Auckland overnight.

The incident occurred on St George St, Papatoetoe around 2am and the man suffered a serious head injury.

The victim and his friend were walking home from a function.

The first victim was knocked out, police say. When he woke up, he saw his friend lying unresponsive on the footpath.

The victim was initially thought to be in critical condition, but this has been downgraded to serious but stable.

A security guard driving past after the incident stopped to help, and called emergency services.

The offender got into a silver BMW, which was being driven by a woman.

The car did a U-turn towards Wyllie Road, Papatoetoe.

Counties Manukau Police are asking the public for sightings of a silver BMW.
