Painting those who fall through the cracks

Painting those who fall through the cracks

Stephen Martyn Welch is a portrait artist on the hunt for subjects to paint. He wants to capture New Zealanders who deserve recognition and wouldn’t normally get painted.

He’s in search of “the severely disabled or the disfigured, or people who just fall through the cracks.”

Alan Breslau was one of Mr Welch’s subjects. Mr Breslau was badly burned in a plane crash in United States in 1963.

Mr Breslau says his life is better, precisely because he was burned.

“People notice you. You stand out in a crowd.”

He visits burn victims in hospitals, teaching kids what it’s like to have people stare.

Now Mr Welch is looking for more people like Mr Breslau to paint -- people who are doing good work and deserve recognition.

If there’s someone you think deserved to become a work of art, let Mr Welch know.
