'Timid' man breaks into taken motel room

Police are looking for anyone who saw a man break into a motel unit while a person slept in Alexandra early this morning.

An upper level unit in the Alexandra Heights Motel was broken into around 2:30am while the person was asleep in bed. They awoke to find an unknown man in the room.

Nothing was taken during the incident, however police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the person involved.

The victim, who was unhurt, described the man as a fair complexioned Maori or Polynesian, aged between 20 and 30 years,  of slight build and approximately 175 -- 177cm tall.

The man is described as having slightly wavy black hair with a high brow, who spoke with a high pitched voice and appeared timid when confronted.

He was wearing a distinctive floral design collared shirt, described as being red, white and black in colour as well as a pair of black pants.

Detective Alan Lee says a scene examination has been completed where evidence for analysis was collected.

Police want the public's help and say the description of the man "is such that a friend or family member could not help but recognise them".

Anyone with information is urged to call police on (03) 440 2500 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
