Armed standoff in Coromandel -- reports

Armed police were called out to Kennedy Bay in the Coromandel today after reports of a number of shots fired.

Senior Sergeant Andrew O'Reilly says the incident started around 11:30am.

Police searched a number of addresses in the area, but Snr Sgt O'Reilly says no firearms have been located.

Several people are assisting police with enquiries as they investigate further.

A witness told Newshub there was a "gun battle" in the streets of Kennedy Bay for around an hour, with three men involved, two of whom were armed.

It was reported that the two armed men were shooting at the unarmed man.

The witness, who was at the Harataunga Marae, said there were 40 people on the marae, including 30 children, and they had shut the gates to protect themselves.

Ambulances had reportedly also been called to the incident, as well as a tracking dog and a police helicopter.

No one was injured.
