Drivers stopped for chain checks in Queenstown

Drivers are being stopped and having their cars checked for chains before crossing the Crown Range in Queenstown.

Heavy snow on the range has caused a number of issues for police who spend hours rescuing people from their stuck cars.

This year the Queenstown Lakes District Council and police are cracking down on drivers, turning away any vehicles without chains.

Drivers are supportive of the policy saying it means the road can remain open for longer in the winter.

A snowfall warning is in place for the Crown Range this afternoon along with Porters Pass and Lindis Pass.
