Torrential rain that pelted the Coromandel overnight was worse than expected.

Slips and flooding caused road closures across the region, with areas around Port Charles and Waikawau Bay still cut off.

Motorists are being warned to take extra care on the roads this morning.

The heavy rain forced one woman out of her home yesterday afternoon, and four vehicles were stranded by slips around Port Charles.

Thames-Coromandel district council spokesman Drew Mehrtens says only a few people had to be rescued.

"There were a couple of ladies that the fire service evacuated around the Colville area and there were also four cars with six people in them last night that had to be taken care of by some locals."

The flooding and slips are still causing issues around Whangapoua Rd, Thames Coast Rd, and Thames to Hikuai Rd.
