Lonely duck has drake expectations

Move over The Bachelor - a lonely female duck desperate for a mate is looking for potential suitors in Auckland.

A native paradise shelduck, or putangitangi, that resides in Auckland Domain has lost her mate and needs a new one.

Domain staff say the birds are known to mate for life, and this particular duck had lived in the domain for seven years with her partner.

However six months ago staff noticed she was alone, waiting in the park every day for her mate to return.

Rescue charity Bird Rescue has advised staff the best course of action is to leave the bird where she is and has promised to bring any rescue ducks into the Domain to see if romance blossoms.

In the meantime, staff say it's just a matter of waiting to see if another shelduck visits the domain to woo its lonely resident.
