Billy Matara, 36, is a member of the Head Hunters gang in east Auckland, Ellerslie police say.

A 35-year-old man remains in critical condition at Middlemore Hospital after the incident.

The shooting occurred at an address on Yates Rd believed to be a boarding house around 3am and a scene examination is underway.

"We believe Mr Matara is potentially armed at present. He should be considered dangerous and we ask the public to tell the police any information to Mr Matara's whereabouts, as we believe he can help us with our inquiries," says Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin McNaughton.

Police think Matara is currently driving a 1998 purple Holden Commodore with the registration JDY678.

Sgt McNaughton says there is no evidence the incident is between two gangs, and he does not believe it's drug related. No firearm has been recovered.

Police are trying to build a picture of the circumstances surrounding this morning's incident, and details leading up to the shooting remain unclear.

Sgt McNaughton says Matara is not a direct threat to anybody else.

"I want to reassure the Mangere community that we are doing everything possible to identify the person or persons responsible for this crime. We have a number of detectives working on this investigation."

If anyone has information, police ask them to contact Detective Sergeant Dave Honiss on (09) 261 1300 or contact police anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
