Officer knocked unconscious in routine car stop

A police dog handler has been knocked unconscious in south Auckland overnight during a routine stop of a car.

The officer stopped the car on Bairds Rd in Otahuhu just before 4am.

Two men got out of a car that had been stopped by the police officer and assaulted him on Bairds Rd in Otahuhu just before 4am.

He was knocked unconscious before a truck passing by scared the men off. They fled in a green Toyota Alteeza.

A passing ambulance treated the officer and took him to hospital where he is in a moderate condition.

The two attackers are described as of average height and build. One was wearing a black t-shirt with white writing on it.
