A 35-year-old man is dead and three others have been winched from the wreckage of a submerged car in a Wairarapa river.

The body of the 35-year-old Lower Hutt man was found on a river bank, and the three survivors were taken to hospital.

They were car enthusiasts travelling back from a motoring event and speed may have been a factor in the crash, media report.
