"We came across cops with armed rifles at the intersection of Glendhu and Sunset," a witness told Newshub.

"They told me I couldn't go down Albany Highway. I turned onto Sunset, tried to come back onto Albany Highway through Unsworth Dr -- there was another cop at the top of Unsworth Dr telling me we couldn't go onto Albany Highway."

Auckland Transport confirmed the road was closed "due to a police operation", but has now opened.

"Please expect delays in the area as congestion eases," it tweeted.

A traffic camera overlooking Albany Highway appeared to show the motorway full, with traffic bumper-to-bumper.

Police have confirmed it was a drug-related operation.
