A 40-year-old man has been arrested following a prolonged sexual assault on a woman in her Porirua home.
Police arrested the Johnsonville man on Friday morning. He has been charged with rape, abduction, aggravated wounding, threatening to kill, burglary and three sexual violation offences.
The attack on the 65-year-old woman in her Waihemo St home early Friday morning left the community fearful for their safety.
Officers yesterday went door-to-door in the Waitangirua neighbourhood seeking information about the alleged offender.
Porirua police thanked the community for their support during the operation. Inspector Paul Basham says the victim is being supported by her family and has been "incredibly brave".
They've sought to reassure the community that such attacks are rare, though the public should take a "common sense" approach to their security.
