A west Auckland man is astonished his car was taken before his eyes as he was working out.

Vinnie, who didn't want his surname used, hung his keys on a board near the front desk of Anytime Fitness in Swanson when he went in for a workout last week. There are no lockers at the gym, according to a gym spokesperson.

"I was on the cross-trainer just looking out the window, and I saw a woman opening my car door. So I quickly ran outside but she was already reversing out the carpark."

The 25-year-old says his wallet was in the car and his payWave was used at a petrol station before he could cancel his cards with the bank.

He says he immediately laid a complaint with police and today his car was finally found, but not in the condition he left it.

"It's badly damaged. It looks like it's been in a crash, with damage to the front. The wheels have also been taken off. There's lots of scratches and dents."

Vinnie wants greater security at the gym and believes management needs to install lockers so that clients have somewhere to store personal items.

A police spokesperson confirmed the incident to Newshub and said a similar incident happened last month in New Lynn.

A similar incident also happened the Anytime Fitness Manukau gym in January. It is not known if the incidents are connected.

No one has yet been charged over the incident.
