Alleged prison contraband smugglers arrested

Two men who allegedly tried to smuggle contraband into Whanganui prison have found themselves behind bars.

Whanganui prison staff and police managed to intercept a parcel at the prison gate filled with contraband earlier this month.

In a joint operation, Corrections and police foiled an attempt to smuggle "large quantities" of cannabis, tobacco, papers, cell phones and accessories into the prison grounds.

They arrested two men outside the perimeter of the prison. The pair have been charged with possession of cannabis for supply and breaching the Corrections Act for unauthorised delivery. One man also faces a charge of possessing a knife.

The men have been remanded in custody.
