Some students are still being checked over by medical staff but the rest have been taken to school.

The bus was heading to Ruahine School. Principal Leanne Angland attended the scene of the accident with the deputy principal and a senior teacher.

"We are extremely happy to report that all children are safe," she said.

"Parents were quickly notified and most children were taken home from the scene.

"There are three children and the bus driver who are receiving further medical investigation. I would like to thank the police, ambulance and Fire Service for their very prompt and professional action."

Police haven't worked out the cause of the crash, but say there have been strong winds in the area and are reminding drivers to take extra care.
