A man has been spotted dropping $10k on Lotto tickets, ahead of the record $40m jackpot that has to be won on Saturday night.

Lotto stores around the country have queues of Kiwis who fancy their chances of beating the one in 38,383,800 odds.

A photo circulating on Facebook shows one man has taken the 'you've got to be in it to win it' sentiment rather seriously and spent $10,000 on tickets.

For $10,000 you can buy 500 $20 Lotto tickets with 15 Lotto lines, 15 Powerball lines and 2 Strike lines.

The draw must be won and if there's no First Division winners the entire jackpot rolls down to the next Division where there are winners. If there is more than one winner in that Division, the total jackpot is shared evenly amongst all winners.

Lotto Powerball's 40 million dollar madness

"This is the biggest jackpot New Zealand has ever seen and it looks like we're breaking all of our previous sales records," says chief executive of Lotto NZ Wayne Pickup.

"More people are playing than normally would. We're selling five times as many tickets than we would on a normal Saturday."
