Māori language parade fills Wellington with song

Above the chatter and hum of people and traffic, Wellington's CBD was filled with song at lunchtime on Monday with thousands walking through the city in the first Māori Language Week Parade.

The route, which left from Parliament around 11:30am, ended at Te Papa.

It included floats, costumes, dance and songs from children and adults in a bid to promote the 41st Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.

The theme for this year is Ākina te Reo, which means "give it a go".

Celebrations and events are planned for the rest of the week.
