The grandstand dividing Takaka

The grandstand dividing Takaka

As politicians could probably tell you, it can be hard to predict what will get the public worked up. In Takaka in Golden Bay, the town is divided over the future of a grandstand.

Residents of Takaka are up in arms about plans for the town's stadium.

The Mayor and Council want to tear it down and turn it into a small car park but citizens see it as a historical building and consider the plans obscene.

The grandstand was actively in use until recently and was home of the local A&P show. But the stairs were removed a few weeks ago so people can't climb up there any longer.

It's more than 100 years old and only one of two left in New Zealand.

Story investigates to find out how the battle of the stadium is going.
