Nearly 30 firefighters have worked through the night to put out a huge fire at an Invercargill business.

The Fire Service says crews arrived at Southland Farm Machinery just before midnight on Saturday to find the building "totally involved" in fire.

A spokesman said the fire took an hour to contain, and the firefighters' first priority was to protect the tractors parked outside, which were later removed.

Crews then worked through the night to put out the fire, the cause of which was still not known, he said.
