Violent offender George Baker has been moved to the at-risk unit in Auckland Prison after an incident with a shank, an improvised weapon, last Friday.

Baker is one of New Zealand's most brutal and high profile killers and was jailed for life after murdering teenager Liam Ashley in the back of a prison van in 2006.

In a statement, Prison Director Tom Sherlock said no staff or prisoners were injured, but the use of weapons, including shanks will not be tolerated.

The at-risk unit is for prisoners who may self-harm and Baker will be there for the foreseeable future.
