Police say a fire that claimed the life of a man in the Christchurch suburb of Woolston is not suspicious.

Police are waiting before they can officially confirm the identity of the body, but have confirmed there's nothing fishy about the blaze in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The fire service reportedly received calls saying a person had been in the Rutherford St property and the body was found inside at the back of the house.

A neighbour says it was "horrifying" how quickly the property went up in flames. Smoke could be seen billowing across the industrial suburb. Crews had to battle to keep the flames from spreading to neighbouring properties.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire.
