Napier police have launched an investigation after a man tricked a woman into letting him into her home, before assaulting her.

The incident occurred about 8am on Thursday, when an Auckland Rd resident answered a knock at her door while home alone.

Detective Sergeant Darren Pritchard explained the man managed to get inside by posing as a representative of a government agency.

Once inside, the man demanded money from the victim before assaulting her and running off with a mobile phone and a few items of clothing.

Det Sgt Pritchard said despite being "badly shaken", the woman was not injured.

The offender has been described as being in his mid-20s, of solid build, and Maori.

Police have urged Taradale residents to check their homes for anything that may help in their investigation.

"Residents in the Auckland Rd and Mission Rd areas can help by scouring their properties for any items the offender may have discarded," he said.

Police want residents to contact Napier Police on (06) 831 0700 if "anything unexpected is found" on their property, or if they have information that could be of help.
