Police will be visiting a number of Auckland high schools today after rivalries came to a head outside a south Auckland KFC on Monday evening.

They were called to "reports of public disorder" outside the Mangere East KFC on Massey Rd just before 5pm, where they found about 100 students attacking each other with knives, plywood and chairs.

One witness told Newshub one group of students on their way home tried to prevent the fight but were "caught in the crossfire".

Police say they didn't come across anyone with injuries, but a KFC employee told the New Zealand Herald some had blood streaming from their faces.

"It was a really big fight between school students. They came down to our store and started punching a guy. They just started smashing him.

"They just came in, they picked up chairs and everything."

Police are seeking CCTV footage of the brawl to find out what happened.

When the police arrived, they say the brawl split into several smaller groups. Five people were arrested, at least two of them under 18.

Police are declining to comment on the incident, as they have just begun their investigation.

People with information about the brawl can call Otahuhu police or provide the information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
