Search on for late Tararua tramper

An experienced tramper has failed to return from a three-day hike in the Tararua Forest Park, sparking a major search.

Search and Rescue teams from Palmerston North, Levin and Wellington are trying to find the 67-year-old, who was headed for Kime Hut when he started his walk on Tuesday.

He'd planned to be back to his car at Otaki Forks by 3:30pm on Thursday, but hasn't yet been seen.

Police are asking those who'd been in the area, particularly around the Kime and Elder Huts and Otaki Forks, for information.

They say he's fit and well-prepared for a short stay in the bush, but police are growing concerned because he was on his own.

He's described as a tall and lean Caucasian who is balding with short grey hair.

Anyone with information has been urged to call Palmerston North Police on (06) 351 2535.
