We all know how important it is to conserve our native birds and hence why it's illegal to hunt, kill or eat them here.

But that's not true of the Chatham Islands, where the locals hunt native weka and have been doing so for years.

For Pete and his friends, they eat the meat and make cloaks with the feathers and use the oil for cooking.

It's legal in the Chatham Islands because weka eat the eggs of other, more endangered native birds, and they're not native to the Chatham Island.

Story went in search of a feed and along the way discovered some radical ideas about how we might ensure the survival of our native birds.
