Hawke's Bay Regional Council has spoken to police about Greenpeace hijacking their Ruataniwha Dam site office on Tuesday morning.

Greenpeace removed the tin shed from the proposed dam site and delivered it to the council buildings to protest the controversial project.

The group put a 'return to sender' sticker it and used a crane to load it onto the back of a truck, before driving it 100km to the Regional Council building in Napier.

Greenpeace cites the recent gastro outbreak in Hawke's Bay as reason for their actions.

"The council needs to put people's health before more industrial dairying and drop the Ruataniwha Dam," says Greenpeace agrictulture campaigner Genevieve Toop.

The dam is a water storage scheme to irrigate surrounding farmland.

"Local waterways in Hawke's Bay are already polluted and under pressure. The dam will compound these problems by driving more intensive dairy farming," says Ms Toop.

It has timed the stunt days before voting papers are released for the upcoming council elections and hopes voters will keep water quality in mind when deciding on a new council.

"People are putting two and two together, and realising that big irrigation schemes like Ruataniwha increase the risk to New Zealand's waterways," said Ms Toop.

Regional council interim CEO Liz Lambert she's "a bit perplexed as to what it was intended to achieve".

The shed has been removed and taken to the council's depot in Taradale.
