Important reason behind quotes on coffee cups by Wellington students

It's a routine for hundreds of thousands of people each day - grabbing a morning coffee and walking away to sip it in silence.

But a group of young women from St Marys in Wellington are adding a bit of brightness to that routine and it's a simple idea to make your day just a bit better.

The simple idea is adding a quote to the cup. It's a simple idea but for a very important reason.

Suicide rates in NZ are shocking and one in five Kiwis are affected by depression in their life. For some, it's hard to acknowledge or talk about how they're feeling and the quote on the cup could give them a breath of life.

The students marched into cafes throughout Wellington and convinced them to spread their messages of joy.

It didn't take much convincing and customers have certainly noticed.

"I thought it was outstanding these young ladies had put together a concept we could somehow help with and put their information out to the public," says Keiran Hughes at Victoria Street Café.

Emily Jenner from Small Talk says it's about seeing the quote, feeling a bit more happy and inspired to get through the day. That's the biggest win.

So has it been successful? Just wait till you find out how many coffee cup lids they've done.
