Kiwi woman celebrates 108th birthday

Linda Wiggins looks pretty good 108.

"She's looking great. Every time we see her she still looks the same," says granddaughter Lorene Maihi.

Ms Wiggins has five children, 19 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and more than 20 great-great-grandchildren.

And surrounded by some of them today, she celebrated yet another birthday.

"She's just such a special lady and she's so easy and so grateful for everything that's done for her," says daughter Lynette Harrison.

Ms Wiggins was born in Auckland in 1908 - the oldest of nine and just a little bit cheeky.

"She went on up to Coromandel and spent a few years up in Coromandel with Granddad Parker and got sent home because she was eyeing off the boys and that was the end of that," says Ms Harrison.

The family later moved to Dargaville, where she met her husband, Fred. He passed away in the 1970s.

Ms Wiggins lived on her own right up until the age of 99, when she moved in with Ms Harrison, and just last year into a rest home.

"Still independent - still walking everywhere and she can still cook," says Ms Harrison.

"Linda is the happiest person I know. She doesn't let things worry her. She just enjoys every day," says clinical nurse manager Bee Bannink.

Ms Wiggins still has a good set of lungs on her, and she says the reason is simple.

"I don't know, just being happy," she says.

That's sound advice, Ms Wiggins.
