Man charged after power outage death

A 21-year-old man has been charged after allegedly driving into a street sign and three power poles, causing a loss of power to residents.

Taupo woman Fai Deane later passed away after her ventilator failed due to the power outage.

Police have been investigating the circumstances of the incident, which happened in Taupo in January.

"The enquiry involved an interview of a number of witnesses, both from the public and those in their professional capacity," says Detective Senior Sergeant Matt Cranshaw.

"Once these had been analysed against the rest of the evidence gathered, the charge of criminal nuisance was identified as the most appropriate."

The Rotorua man will appear in the Taupo District Court on Wednesday.
