Several people were involved in a street brawl shortly before a man, believed to be homeless, was found dead in a central Auckland shop doorway, police say.

They are investigating the death of the man, who was found in the doorway of Dunkin' Donuts on Queen Street at about 1am on Thursday morning.

"At this stage it is not known how the man died and his death is currently being treated as unexplained," Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Baldwin said in a statement.

Police did not yet know if a fight between several people shortly before the man was found was linked to his death, he said.

The victim has not yet been named and police are trying to contact his next of kin.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine exactly how he died.
