The year was 2005 and the number one song was Mariah Carey's 'We Belong Together' when four friends decided to hop in a car - not for karaoke, but to kick off a carpool.
A decade later, they have travelled to work together every weekday and have covered a whopping 190,000 kilometres.
The journey begins 40 kilometres north of Christchurch at 6:30am to avoid a traffic crawl, because the population north of the city has boomed since the quakes.
The team believe they've saved $29,000 in petrol in the last decade but say it's not just money motivating them - it's also the company.
Recently they've added another carpool member, but the others joke he's still on probation.
