The Kiwis who've carpooled every day for 10 years

The year was 2005 and the number one song was Mariah Carey's 'We Belong Together' when four friends decided to hop in a car - not for karaoke, but to kick off a carpool.

A decade later, they have travelled to work together every weekday and have covered a whopping 190,000 kilometres.

The journey begins 40 kilometres north of Christchurch at 6:30am to avoid a traffic crawl, because the population north of the city has boomed since the quakes.

The team believe they've saved $29,000 in petrol in the last decade but say it's not just money motivating them - it's also the company.

Recently they've added another carpool member, but the others joke he's still on probation.
