Three crew and one passenger were injured when an Air New Zealand flight encountered turbulence and had to return to Vietnam on Sunday morning.

It happened about 40 minutes into the flight which left around 8:20am, and those injured have been assessed and treated by medical staff.

Passengers had to be accommodated in Ho Chi Minh city overnight, after the flight's re-departure was delayed until 7am on Monday.

One passenger made a Facebook post about the experience which she called a "flight from hell".

She said that as she was being handed a tray of food "we hit some really bad turbulence, the plane drops and all my food flies all over the floor and me", and everyone was screaming. Shortly afterwards she heard "the crew calling for a doctor over the loud speaker".

"We thank customers for their patience," an Air NZ spokesperson said.
