A child who died at Piha beach on Saturday evening died as a result of a tragic accident, police say.
It was initially understood the child, who was found at the north end of the beach, had drowned.
Police say they are still in the process of notifying next of kin.
The death will be referred to the coroner.
Earlier in the evening a man also drowned in Warea, south Taranaki.
