Hamilton Mayor announced after close race

After what's been dubbed the closest mayoral election ever in New Zealand, Hamilton's runner-up candidate will be asking for a vote recount.

Andrew King was announced as the new Mayor of Hamilton on Thursday morning. He beat rival Paula Southgate by nine votes.

Counting put Mr King at 8728 votes, and Ms Southgate with 8719 votes.

"I have been inundated with messages of support - thank you all so very much," Ms Southgate wrote on Facebook.

"Many of you have asked me to request a recount. Part of me would rather not because of the further uncertainty it creates.

"But many people feel very strongly that I should because the margin is so close. Given that, yes, I will be asking for a recount."

Ms Southgate has three days to lodge an application for a recount with the district court.

Mr King is due to be officially sworn in on Thursday, October 27.

After votes closed on Saturday and counting had finished, Mr King was just ahead of Paula Southgate by 14 votes.

It was a tense waiting game as 352 special votes were counted.

"[We've] certainly seen close votes, never for a mayoralty and not for a mayoralty of a large metropolitan city. We've had close ones with wards and community boards and local boards but not for a mayoralty," Electoral officer Dale Ofsoske says.

He says the result will affect also likely affect the makeup of the council.

"Both mayoral candidates have been provisionally elected to each of the respective wards… there may be implications on the next highest polling candidate for example coming through and being elected."
