Iconic miniature railway looks for new generation of operators

Palmerston North does certain things very well with rugby supporters, wind turbines and fish burgers but we may have found the best thing.

The miniature railway has been running for almost half-a-century and now it's gearing up and preparing for the next 50 years and looking for a new generation of volunteers.

The Esplanade Scenic Railway, a 2.2 km loop through native bush, gardens and playgrounds, is one of the icons of the city.

The railway has had millions of happy customers and it's now relying on old blood, like 82-year-old Royce to teach young bloods how to operate it.
