One of Auckland's most famous streets is getting a makeover.
Auckland Council has announced today that Karangahape Rd, better known as K Rd, will get a major upgrade - including a new protected cycleway on both sides of the road.
Auckland Transport's walking and cycling manager Kathryn King says improving the road for cycling is key for the future.
"We want to improve the connection along K Rd, get some good protective space for cycling, and enable more people to cycle who currently don't," she explained.
Once the new City Rail Link is built there will also be a station on Mercury Lane and a possible light rail station at the intersection with Queen Street - so the council says it wants the area to be spruced up.
Auckland Transport's Kathryn King says the changes will also cater for shops and restaurants.
"We have growing demands of the retail and hospitality industry, who want to make the most of their outdoor space along K Rd - so we're looking to make the streetscape more flexible," she said.
Auckland Council is accepting feedback from the public until November 20, and Ms King says they really want people to have their say.
"The consultation runs for a month, and we'd love to get people's feedback on what they'd like to see for K Rd, and how we can really make our streets better for the whole community."
Preliminary designs estimate the scheme will cost around $11 million.
