He's one of New Zealand's longest serving search and rescue pilots, and is regularly hailed as a hero and considered a pioneer of the industry.
Now, John Funnell has recounted his headline-making daring adventures in his new book, Rescue Pilot. He takes the readers right back to the very beginning when he first started daydreaming about flying.
Often referred to as a daredevil, his mission to the remote Campbell Island, where he rescued a MetSevice employee who was attacked by a shark, has been his most noted. He received a Bravery Citation following the mission.
After almost 50 years in the industry, Mr Funnell is now retiring and Story joined him on his final flight piloting a rescue helicopter in Taupo.
