Losi Filipo's lawyer says a conviction would return the disgraced rugby player to the "dire prospects" he had growing up and the decision to discharge him was the right one.

Wellington High Court Justice David Collins has reserved his decision over an appeal by police against the discharge without conviction of Filipo.

Filipo, a former Wellington Lions player, brutally assaulted four people during a night out in October last year but was discharged without conviction for fears it would jeopardise his rugby career.
