A man has died after the car he was driving left a road and struck an embankment in rural Karaka, south of Auckland.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Linwood Ave at about 11:30am on Tuesday.

A police spokeswoman said the sole, male occupant of the car had died at the scene.

It was unclear whether the man had died due to the crash or a possible medical incident at the time, a fire service spokesman said.

The road is down to one lane as police investigated.
