Scooter injury claims soar: Should helmets be compulsory?

Wearing a helmet when you're riding a bicycle has been compulsory since 1994.

But what about non-motorised scooter, which many kids ride?

ACC injuries used to be in the hundreds, but now it's in the thousands and the claims are soaring because of scooters.

Just in 2016, there have been 5807 claims and there are still two months of the year to go.

Safekids NZ want scooter helmets to be made compulsory.

"If your child has a brain injury that can have a lifelong impact and impact on the family," says director Ann Weaver.

The number of severe brain injuries among cyclists dropped dramatically when helmets became law and Safekids NZ want that law extended to scooters and skateboards.

So is it time the law requires kids to wear helmets on their scooters?
